Just a short note to say that I'm thinking about a few hens for the back yard. I want a variety of color in the eggs. My three year old is very interested but the wife is another story..... I think I have narrowed it down to Buckeyes, Marans, Americana, Aracana, EE, and Welsummers. I wanted a friendly bird but also different color eggs.

The plan is to get good stock fertile eggs and hatch a bunch. I will then pick out the hens from each type and distribute the rest to others. I wanted my son to see the process from egg to chick to bird to egg.....

I am now trying to figure out a good coop design for the back yard. We have preditors in the area so this is a critical step...

You have a very good breed choice!
I would also look at California Whites.
I LOVE them
