I have been thinking of getting geese for a bit now..... I think it is about time.

I have been going back and forth about the breed (Toulouse or Sebbies)

I am pretty sure I want to get Toulouse...... because of temperament and hardiness

I need some advice about ordering from Holderread, I truly want 2-3 females but they only sell goslings as sexed pairs or "Each" which I am sure will be straight run (aka males

)

How would you suggest ordering? ( I truly do not want to spend that kind of money only to offer the males up for the freezer

Can I order just 2?

Any advice would be appreciated. (I am thinking of ordering 2-3 more ducks so maybe I can order them form Holderread to "meat the Quota" if there is one.

Thanks

Sorry guys..... I had the title wrong......

If you want Dewlap Toulouse from Holderread, better get your order in now. He always sells out early.

The best way to order geese from Holderread is in "pairs", unless you want a large number of geese. With pairs, you are sure to get both geese and ganders. With a large order of straight run, you will surely get several nice females. If you only order a couple of birds straight run, you run the risk of getting all males, because it is pure chance what you get.

I have had straight run ducks from Holderread and they are definitely straight run. Not what is left over after the females are removed. I believe that Holderread is trustworthy.

Another thing to note: Holderread is cutting back and selling out of some of his breeds. There is no telling what will go next, so if you want birds from Holderread, get them now.

A suggestion: If you don't want males, order the top exhibition pairs, raise them up to the juvenile stage and then take your excess males to a poultry show and sell them. Top quality Dewlap Toulouse bring a lot of money from the show crowd.

Again, be careful about getting too low on stock because it might be possible that you won't be able to replace them within a couple of years.

I doubled my order for Pomeranians because I am afraid that he will sell out and I won't be able to get another gander if anything happens to mine. So, there are going to be more geese here than I really want (touch wood, because I won't get them until next spring).

I was just thinking about this option this after noon. I need to hash this out with hubby...... I am thinking this might be that better option... Thanks

I broke down and sent an email to Holderreads. I received a very nice and very informative email back.

I am so worried about this purchase and the email set me a bit more at ease.

Has anyone from this far away from Holderreads ordered goslings? How have they fared in shipment for so long?......

I know they have, but I have not.

[For me] it is always nerve wracking to venture into something new. I have ordered from Metzer and was thrilled with it, but I was still a bit worried until they all arrived..
