Thinking through raising my own meat breeds

I have been toying with the idea of keeping 12 heavy breed hens and one rooster in an attempt to raise my own meat birds and still have eggs. I don't want to go with one breed because I like looking at all the different colors so I was thinking 2 hens of each breed. I know which breeds are good for meat, I'm just wondering what would be the best breed rooster to go with or wouldn't it really matter?

I just hatched my own eggs for the first time but they will all be mutts because I have no idea what my rooster is (a mutt from my sister) but he is a good size. I'm interested to see what my chicks look like. This chick hatching thing has proved to be addicting.

You can't go wrong with a New Hampshire.....Select one that is good sized and looks as close to the breed ideal as possible from good production stock....The offspring will grown quickly, be good sized, and multicolored.......If you use a Brahma, Giant, or Cochin the progeny will be slow growing and poor layers......Have a good year with your project.

Thanks Bill!
