my very first hatch i got 23 babies out of 42...they were doing great, aesome actually i had moved them out to a secure (or so i thought pen) and they were just growing like none other...they were 3 weeks old... yesterday my husband and 6 year old got home and there were no chickens....well i dead one in the yard..and the neighbors coon hound was loose...we are just sick by all this, it makes you just want to give up...i do not now i could go through this again...we were so excited about those babies.....

Oh noooooooooooooo .. All these stories about predators, dogs, and missing and dead chickens has me REALLY gunshy about even GETTING any chickens ..

I will build a FORT KNOX before I get them .. because it'll be MY Aust Shep that will kill them .. grrrrrrrrr.

We had an attack last night. Coon is the likely suspect. Ripped a chicken's head off right through the cage.
We've been trapping coons lately and then our trap got smashed (DH ran it over with the Bobcat) so I tightened security as much as possible but it was not enough.

Just goes with the territory....

I'm so sorry! You're poor son! Bless his little heart for having to have to see that! Our 7 year old saw one of our babies die in an accident Tues. and was up until 1am crying. I would say something to your neighbor! That dog should not be allow to run loose! Because of your neighbors lack of respect for their neighbors, your son has had what could have been a wondeful childhood experience and memory turn into a horrible nightmare he'll always remember! I'm so sorry!

Sooooo sorry about what happened to your chickens ...but please , dont give up ? ....we lost our first flock of 9 to coons....but a year later after building a Fort Knox Coop...we are back in the chicken biz and loving it ! I hope one bad experience wont ruin it for you .......

No, Don't give up - Chickens are so wonderful - I agree too about a dog will strow dead chickens and feathers everywhere. It is possible though but my first guess would be another predator if you didn't find a scene like that.
