This pretty fella started coming over last week and now stays all day with my Australorp hens. Does anyone know what breed he is? He goes back to his home each evening and comes back early the next morning. Is it common for roosters to do this? Thanks so much!

He looks like a crossbreed. With that comb, possibly a Sicilian Buttercup cross? Do you know what breeds your neighbors keep?

He's pretty neat. I'm guessing he is the non-dominant rooster in his flock, so he likes hanging out with your girls, plus they are "birds of a feather."

The only thing I would be wary of is him bringing diseases or something into your flock that you don't want. Hopefully he's a healthy boy.

Welcome to BYC!

He looks like a mixed breed. To me his comb also looks like a Buttercup comb, which I believe only Sicilian Buttercups have. So he could be a mix with Sicilian Buttercup in him.

The buttercup comb is a stabilized version of what happens when you cross a breed with the 'v' comb like Polish with a single combed bird. The crest feathers are what leads me to believe that was what happened with this guy. It's definitely possible there was a Buttercup parent but it's equally possible that there wasn't. He's handsome and healthy whatever the case may be.

I did not know that! Thank you for that info. Makes sense!

As a young lad I had a White Leghorn rooster that would go to a neighbors farm and hang out with the hens there and then return toward evening. And I was thankful because he terrorized my sister and me before he started wandering. One morning he did not come off the trees where he roosted and looking back it probably was an owl that took him.

I have disliked rooster for 55 years! I too was terrorized by one everyday while waiting for the school bus.
