when a hen is ready to sit her eggs or be a mommma

its not stupid to ask that

It certainly is not stupid. Some of my chickens are never broody - it has been bred out of some egglaying breeds virtually altogether. A broody decides to sit tight on any eggs and will get very cross if you try and move her - to the extent that I have worn gloves to avoid the pecking. You have to try and break this unless you want her on fertile eggs.

Not a stupid question at all ! The only hens out of my 30 are banties ( one silkie , one turken ) are Broody most of the time ! They're nice about it though , all they do is fluff up and let you take the eggs . I'm starting to get ...I think 1 BO , 1 AUS , in my new pen who are doing the same ...YEAH ! We plan on building a nesting area in the new coop above the others ( it has 10' walls ...so hubby has been itching to build it and raise more chicks...I about fell on my face when he told me this ...plus he wants to get an incubator...............
