So I made it until day 8. Does anyone do the daily cooling period offered on some incubators?(mines brinsea) Was just wondering if anyone had strong feelings on it either way. Do you use it? Why or why not? Trying to decide if I am going to do it or not. Thanks!

IMO, it doesn't hurt them since the hen would get off of the nest. I don't purposely do it, but I don't fret if they're out for a while. It doesn't change the length of incubation time. I cooled one batch of duck eggs and then the next batch didn't cool at all, the majority hatched on the same day. I think it's unnecessary, but it definitely doesn't hurt. I have heard that cooling eggs with small air cells, or cooling shipped eggs might help because it helps them achieve better weight loss, but I've never tried it because my air cells are usually fine. If I were you I would probably not do it unless my air cells were on the smaller side, but my incubator doesn't have a cooling feature so it's more work for me to cool them. Let us know what you do, and how it works out!

I don't see why not. Hens get up and party a couple times a day (at my house they go bat crap crazy and run around like insane asylum escapees with axes, terrorizing all the other animals). They stay off the nest depending on the air temp and humidity. The warmer and more humid it is, the longer they stay off. Colder or dryer, shorter breaks.

I think I will put it on an hour a day, Another factor I should have prob men tioned is I live off grid and have a solar set up. I have had multiple power losses, all less than five minutes. I'm worried how this might effect the cooling timer.

I don't think it would change the timer. When I do it I do an hour every other day, usually because its more work for me, but also because I am super anxious for them to hatch and if they're sitting out I think about them more, lol. I like keeping them hidden in the incubator where I know they're safe and growing. Those power outages shouldn't hurt the eggs at all. Do you have a generator just in case?

Yup I have a generator. My eggs stay in the incubator for cooling, its programmed to turn the heater off but keep the fan on for as long as i want and as often as I want. Just need to set it once in the menu. Its a Brinsea mini advance ii.

Sounds good! Let us know how it works for you!
