One of my broody hens doesn't leave her nest to poop like the others do, and today when I investigated, she had 2 dead chicks beneath her. Is this just faulty instinct or could I have helped prevent that?
Also, I gave that hen's one live chick to the other mama who has 2. Will this cause problems? I'm thinking maybe the first mama isn't great at the mothering gig?
And, with 3 separated broody hens inside the same pen, will they be able to raise their chicks with the rest of the flock or will the mamas squabble over the chicks? I'm thinking maybe I'll just give all the surviving chicks to one mama? Except there will be maybe 2 weeks of age spread among the chicks.
Thoughts? So far, I have 3 live chicks that seem strong!
