NEW COOP.jpg

I want to add more to my flock and im in love with my current coop. Cleaning is a breeze (do it everyday that's how easy it is), and its gorgeous, waterproof, highly ventilated, and well made. I also now want to add two more gals to my little flock.

What do yall think about a three story chicken coop? My husband can build anything. Here's what I am thinking.

Vault the coop up two feet. Add Flooring. Add a ramp. This then becomes a second floor (middle level).
Next, wire a new bottom on all four sides, add flooring, and a roll out cleaning tray - this becomes the lowest level.

Lastly, on the second and third floors, widthwise, add new nesting boxes.

Does anyone have a chicken coop that is three stories tall? Whats yalls opinions on this?

A ramp will take up much floor space on both levels.....
....or will the ramps be outside the coop?

I never bothered with ladders I left open space so they can hop up 2' from one level to the next.
On the top level I have 2x4 removable roost (for easier cleaning) with poop boards 3½" from the bottom of the roost. This saves any eggs laid through the night. A height of 2' can be obtained with ease for a chicken. I have kept as many as 24 chickens in 4'x8' coop with no problems over winter confined to the coop.
On the second level
I have gone with a crib side that I found in the garbage at the side of the road one day.
One the bottom floor (not shown)
On the floor I have gone with a wire 2" grid (wire the size of a pencil) over my coop floor. Similar to what is pictured below with 4"x4"x4" cubed blocks stationed under neath the grid on top of a tarp to form a drop pit it worked excellent all summer and I will clean the coop before winter sets in and things freeze solid. The grid even keeps you chickens feet cleaner which in turn keeps your eggs and nest boxes less soiled. I live in Canada and am subject to -40º temperatures.

Clean up is simple replace the tarp with a second one. Spread the first tarp out in the sun to bake and dry. Then flex the first tarp over the compost bin and hose off any stubborn chicken poop.

I have 68 trips around the sun for decades I have been raising chickens
For years I have been lining my nest boxes with the folded empty nylon mesh feed bags.

When a bag gets soiled pop out the soiled and pop in another. Poop just peels off in below freezing temperatures and just flakes off when left out in the sun to bake and dry. It is the best method I have stumbled upon in my 68 trips around the sun.

Oh! Remove the excess string from the open end of the bag it can get tangled in your birds legs and wings.

Easy Peasy Japaneasy.

Well, we have a ramp inside the coop and it came like that already. My drawing looks super narrow, its actually a really wide coop. But anyhow, I never thought about making a ramp from the outside into the second floor. very good idea.

Putting some real measurements on your drawings would really help....
....but in general, if you want more birds it's best to go 'out' instead of 'up'.
