I just picked up 3 black sex (?) hens and a rooster. This is an established group. The owner had to move and she had to give up her chickens. I have spent $700 building a 12 X 20 run and a 6 X 6 house. When I picked them up this evening, 2 of the hens are missing feathers on their backs. One of their backs looks pretty bad. The woman said they have ticks and she dusted them with Sevin dust yesterday and they needed treating again. Is Sevin dust ok to use? I am ordering Food Grade DE, but it won't be here for a week or so. Will the DE work? I can post picks tomorrow. Any help?? I am new to chickens, so please help me.

THANKS in Advance

Steve

Sevin dust is fine, I used it for lice on my chickens.

However, I highly doubt that the birds have ticks. If there are only 3 hens for the rooster, he is probably simply "over"breeding them. THe rooster standing on their backs will cause them to lose their feathers in the back/saddle area. You can buy or make hen saddles to protect their backs.
