I want to place my order now to receive my birds the first week of September. Where do you all prefer to get your Cornish X and why?

I'd get them from the nearest source possible to save on shipping.
Sex won't matter because you'll process before it matters!

Distance is the primary factor. For the Cornish X, the hatcheries buy their eggs and there are only a few sources.

Lazy J Farms Feed & Hay :

Order from Meyer Hatchery in Ohio. Their broilers are AWESOME.

We have one customer that received a set of broilers from us (Meyer) and a competitor feed mill (Townline) and the Meyer birds out grew and were healthier than the Townline broilers.

The birds I ordered from Meyer were smaller than Townline (barely 5lbs avg dressed at 8 weeks compared to 5.5 to 6+ from Townline avg). I guess there could have been other factors involved. They were definitely healthy birds, but I attributed that to their slower growth.

Meyer is a good place to deal with though. I've ordered chickens and other merchandise from them a few times.

Glad to see this post! My friend and I are looking to get a small batch (25 or so) and try this. I've been looking at Ideal and McMurray. I'll check out Meyer as well. I'm worried about the heat and distance for shipping. Ideal is closer, but it will be scorching the whole way.

my cx's from mt. healthy didn't get nearly as big as the ones from murray mcmurray. a huge difference. same feed.

males will outgrow females by a whopping difference. whopping. get males if you want bigger birds.

females for fryers, males for roasters in same time. or all males and process earlier for fryers.

Ideal has always shot me straight and done me right.

My family very rarely eats a whole chicken. We tend to prefer parts, meaning, breasts, drums, legs etc all separate. So is the fryer broiler point moot?

Any idea how long to let birds go to get decent breast meat? Males or females better?
