I don't know where to post this, so I'll try here.

Does anybody know how long it takes for a pullet to digest her meal? My pullet, Rosemary, swallowed a polycarbonate screw Sunday night at approx 6:45pm. She has an appointment tomorrow morning at 9am, but I want to know "how far" in general the screw may have gone in the mean time. She is still eating, drinking and was running around a few hours back. She dug a small hole in the garden and was laying down on her side, the cold winds are back, so I'm trying not to panic that she is at death's door now.

I sprinkled their favorite treat into their tractor (boss) and she sprang up and gobbled them down.

So how long until she poops it out?

How long do you have to wait for your charges to expel their explorations?

Edit: I misspelled the "Digestion" in the subject line....

My beautiful Rosemary passed away at the vet's office. She seemed to lively and well. She weighed 4.7oz with clear lungs, strong heart and very healthy...except for the darn plastic screw. If you have ANYTHING with a sharp or semi sharp tip around...remove it immediately! Better safe than sorry. The vet did get some xrays and said the screw was deep into her gizzard then she started to flap around and drop. He did CRP for 15 minutes but she already left her body.
He is an excellent avian doctor and was shaken up with tears in his eyes.

So I took her home for Parsley to see. Parsley was really sqawking when I took Rosemary out of the tractor...and kept up until she saw her. She stepped on her, pecked at her comb...then layed down with her saying goodbye. About 10 minutes later...she flew to my shoulder and just kept her head and body glued to mine. She was very very quiet just cooing while I massaged her legs and feet. she hopped down onto my lap .... then stayed by rosemary then just walked away.

So I have my beautiful Rosemary, next to me while I type this. I am going to have her cremated (no jokes please) and bring her home.

The vet said to bring Parsley inside and give her lots of attention and get another chicken her size or keep her a house chicken.

I can't believe this is happening.

For all the people who think "it's just a chicken" .... May God open your eyes and heart.

I am so sorry about your loss. And no...I am not one of those that say "it was just a chicken".

I will be so much more vigiliant regarding pointed objects near my girls, though....so thank you for that warning.

We decided to bury her at home instead of cremating her. I am going to buy a rosemary plant and place it over her, next to the dog kennel/coop area. Still in a state of shock, numbness...it never gets easy no matter how old you get.

This post broke my heart so sorry for your loss! I would give you a 4 wk silkie for Parsley but I am too far away. I know how you feel these are my babies and if I were to lose one I would also be a complete mess. I had a full funeral for a Veiled Chameleon named Scarlett (she was egg bound) a few years back. I was heart broken for months. And ended up letting Rett go because he was lonely and I did not want another female because of the egg bound problems females are known for having.
I am so sorry your heart hurts.
