Tiny egg from two year old rir hen. 🤣

One of my rir hens layed this tiny egg a couple of days ago. She layed her normal egg yesterday so she’s fine but I just couldn’t help wondering what might have gone through her little mind when she layed that tiny one! She’s an excellent layer so I’m not worried but this IS her third season laying eggs. I just wonder if she’s going to start slowing down now.

A small egg like that is not that unusual. It may have a yolk in it and no white, it may not have any white in it, it may have a perfectly formed miniature egg. It is just an oops, I figure we are all entitled to an occasional oops as long as it doesn't become habit forming.

What probably happened a piece of something went through her internal egg making factory. Often that is a bit of an organ that sloughed off and found its way down that egg making factory. Bits slough off in the body cavity all the time, nothing to worry about. When you open it up you probably will not even see what it was.

Pullets just starting to lay tend to do things like this. Old hens tend to do things like this. 3 years old isn't that old so I would expect this to be a really rare occurrence. If that is the worst you get then I consider you to be doing well.

Fairy, fart, wind, rooster eggs are usually from a tiny piece of tissue breaking loose from the reproductive tract, or an immature ova(yolk) and the body forms an egg around it. Color can be darker than 'normal' as the pigment coating released has to cover a much smaller area so is thicker. Can happen with any age layer, but more common with older layers.
