Tiny eggs

In general, the first few eggs don't hatch very well. If you have the patience, it might be good to wait a few weeks.

Just curious, my other hen died egg-bound with her first egg, if a small egg was laid first I was wondering if I could hatch these or if I should stick to the original plan and eat them.

thanks

My understanding is you really don't want to hatch the eggs from a new pullet, you want them to get to be 10 - 12 months old first. While the eggs my hatch (much lower chance), you are much more likely to have issues with those chicks. Just give the girl a bit to get the whole egg laying thing down first and you will have a better hatching experiences for it.

I'm not waiting a year when some of mine start laying at 4months.

Odds are much lower pullet eggs will hatch though and higher that you'll have weak chicks and deformities. It's best to wait until they are laying normal sized eggs which generally just takes a month or 2. If it's a situation where you lose the hen though then I don't see the harm in trying provided you are prepared for a possible negative outcome.

All my Polish hens were the same age and started laying at the same time and I was curious and tried to hatch all their first eggs and had 100% hatch on all of them with no problems at all... Even the small and weird shaped eggs hatched fine.
