Unfortunately I tipped my incubator over this morning while my eggs are in lockdown. It was a freak accident, I was able to catch it before it hit the ground, but one egg (that I can see) is severely cracked. They kind of piled up on top off each other on one side. No bleeding is visible. I have not candled since because I did not want cause any additional stress on any survivors, but I’m convinced any chicks hatching is quite unlikely.
Experienced hatchers:
- How long should I wait to call it quits?
-would an eggtopsy show if impact/trauma is the reason my chicks didn't hatch?
- should I bother candling or does that jeopardize the egg with the cracked shell, in the unlikely event it’s still alive?

As always, thanks for the information!

It looks like the egg next to the very cracked one has pipped. At this point if they are truly on day 21 I would leave them. They should be hatched within the next 24 hours if your timing is correct. If there is a chance the timing is off and it will be more than 24 hours, I might quickly pull out the cracked one and melt some (birthday) candle wax onto the cracks. But I wouldn’t completely seal it in case the chick didn’t pip due to the crack. Also keep it very moist inside the incubator. Keep us posted!

I thought that as well, but I think it might actually just be a fragment from the very cracked one. It’s hard to say without looking closer!

When you suggest very moist, what % of humidity do you mean?

Have you been keeping humidity somewhere around 65-70% during lockdown? I would suggest keeping it on the high end, like 70%.
