Tips on owning a Silkie?

I was helping my boyfriend with work today and when we were getting ready to leave a house he saw a chicken right outside of the door. The homeowner told us about the chicken and said that a few days ago a German Sheppard came walking through the subdivision with the chicken in its mouth and three days later it's still alive and they don't know what to do with it because no one in or near the subdivision owns chickens. He told us that if we wanted it we could have it, so of course we decided to bring it home! Any tips or tricks would be more than welcome on Silkies!

I'm glad she's ok and kudos to you for taking her in! Silkies are a pleasure to own. They make great "pet" chickens and are real sweethearts. They also make fantastic mothers, but you may find that some go broody a little too often. I just had one of my hens hatch out and raise some babies and she's already on the nest again. Well I guess the German shepherd had a soft mouth or she wouldn't be here. She is a real beauty. Chickens are flock animals and much happier to have companions. Do you intend to get more birds? If you want to keep her as a house pet, you should check out "people with house chickens," thread. My friend has had various house chickens for over 25 years, she currently has 2 silkies and 2 seramas. They get in the chair with her to watch TV at night.

Due to the type of feathers silkies have, they aren't good at flying, they can jump pretty high though. In a coop they might roost on a low bar, but generally prefer to pile up on the floor, in a corner with other silkies.

If you put "Silkie thread," in the search box, it will pop up and you could get your silkie questions answered by breeders, etc.
