So when we got our chickens we were not planning on getting a roo, but the lady just gave us one for free. I know now that you should never put a rooster in with only 7 hens, and we will never make that same mistake again.

For the first maybe 8 months we had him he treated his hens perfectly, but as soon as Fall hit he started over-mating 5 of them, and their feathers quickly got damaged. We didn't realize it was from our rooster for the first while since it hit right at Fall and we thought they were molting. Soon we figured it out, though, and decided we were going to butcher him as soon as possible. We finally did it today, so the hens will be free from him from now on.

Are there any ways to help promote feather growth? Any foods we should be giving them? I really hate seeing them like this and want their feathers to grow back ASAP. I've heard people say that the other hens will peck the feathers as they are coming in. My hens NEVER peck each other, so do you think this will be an issue?

I would feed higher protein, flax, mealworms, bugs, all promote feather growth
