Our mixed breed hen, Wishbone, had eight days to go til hatch time. She selected her own nest site, a very good one, inside an elevated pen with a latching door. She had her own fan and was totally protected from predators. This morning at breakfast she was beating on the door wanting to come out; usually she doesn't leave the pen at all and has all her food and water in her pen. My son let her out, hoping she'd eat and go back to the nest, but I just saw her in the front yard enjoying a huge dust bath! She was so dusty I didn't even recognize her! I'm pretty sure they can tell by hearing or movement (?) if the egg is fertile or not, cause I've seen other Mom hens throwing bad ones out of the nest. I'm guessing all the eggs were duds, or did she just get tired, or was it too hot? Just curious.

I don't know...is she still off her nest or did she go back? What did you do with the eggs if she didn't go back?

You could candle the eggs to see if they're still alive, that would tell you if she's a bad mom or wise enough to know they all died.

She is still off the nest. I didn't think about candling them; that would've been a good idea... they were really nasty; poop and who knows what on them; I put them far back in the woods for the critters; we don't have an incubator and I didn't anticipate getting one in time to continue incubation. She is acting a little funny today; going around making this little peeping noise, or short cackle, every once in a while. Otherwise she acts normal; eating, chasing bugs, sunbathing. I guess we will watch her for a while; beginning to wonder if she might be sick.
