Any new chicken tenders this year thinking of buying one of those cute little coops from Tractor Supply - DON’T do it!

We made this mistake and IMO it’s really easy to do. They’re cute and small, advertised for up to 6 chickens. You just don’t realize how big they will grow, they grow for almost a year! But other than that issue, check out what your chickens will be stuck in if you live in a winter climate.

Every day I am so thankful that we did something else for them. I will say this is a nice little grow out coop or isolation unit in the right temps!

Our TSC has some parked right out front with the $600 sticker visible from a distance.

Every week when we walk past, I say to my mom just as loudly as I can, "Look at that thing, that's not a coop!", and she says "Maybe for Bantams!" ... in the hope that some other poor unsuspecting shopper might hear us and avoid making that mistake.
I don't know how else to help, it's really sad that so many people get sucked in.

When I think of all the things we didn't know when we got started and how easy it would have been for us to fall for it... thankfully we knew a carpenter at the time who offered to build us something so we had to go hunting for coop guidelines and learned that way.

Aw I like that, you and your mother are saints. It’s so sad that any company tries it sell these as coops. Going to Murdochs the other day i saw some attractive little coops and I can see how people so easily get sucked into these, we definitely were victim to this.

I’m afraid for the large amount of new chicken tenders this year. It breaks my heart to see these sold. I know other peoples chickens are are not my business but I if I can keep one peeps in from going this route, my job is done.

I have these coops. 3 chickens in each. We raised them off of the ground by 24 inches and added a perch. There is plenty of room for 3 standard size chickens. And the nesting box and sleeping area is perfect. I paid $299.00 each. ***if you look at the photo, you can't even see them because they are in the back rolling around, dust bathing. and we planned ahead for the weather by enclosing them in a shed.

If they work for your flock, and they’re happy, healthy that’s what matters. We only have 4 standard chickens and it was so tight for them that only 2 would roost inside and the other 2 would roost outside. The roosting partners changed, too, so I don’t think it was a pecking order thing. I would sometimes see 3 roosting together, but they bickered when they did.

The run area I have to disagree with you on. I cringed seeing all 4 of ours in there. I could never leave them in there for any extended amount of time. If they can free range all day and you have a super mild climate year round, then, yes, the run would work.
