Here it is, the end of August, and I have one chicken that likes to sit on all the eggs and I'm wondering if this may be a good time to allow her to do her thing.
I gave her two ceramic eggs to tend to until I get more information.
Question #1 is this too late in the season to let her start her thing?
Question #2 If I allow her to sit on the eggs she wants, how can I be sure that those eggs are fertile?
Question #3 How long does it take her to hatch those eggs that are fertile, and what special care does she need for the process?
Question #4 Once hatched, what special care do the chicks need.
Question #5 If it gets cold, what do I need to do for them?
What else should I know to decide if we go forward with this process?
Thanks so much from one always learning...

I gave her two ceramic eggs to tend to until I get more information.
Question #1  is this too late in the season to let her start her thing? Not if you have a heated place to raise the chicks
Question #2  If I allow her to sit on the eggs she wants, how can I be sure that those eggs are fertile? After a week of being brooded the eggs can be candled to see if they are developing.
Question #3  How long does it take her to hatch those eggs that are fertile, and what special care does she need for the process? 221 days to hatch. No special care; just a nest box where she will not be disturbed.
Question #4  Once hatched, what special care do the chicks need. A safe environment, water, chick starter.
Question #5  If it gets cold, what do I need to do for them? They will need to be in a heated building.
What else should I know to decide if we go forward with this process? The hen will do most of the work. Give her a safe place to raise her chicks.

Question 1 is to be answered first of all for sure. Where do you live? Will give you the best thoughts on .. if you should at this time of yr. If you live in a warm environment..then go for it. If winter is coming soon...reconsider.
