It seems my chicks have pasty butt. One of them has a dirty bum, but I can still see the poo coming out easily. Does this need to be cleaned? I don't want to over do things - handling makes them scared. What is better in this case. Leaving be or washing the bum?

Go ahead and clean it off. Because if it continues to build up, then there will be a problem. And handling them is what eventually makes them not so scared of you.

I would with a warm wash cloth, just to be on the safe side. Try adding a little bit of Apple cider vinager to their water, that will prevent any more pasty butts. Good Luck!

If it looks as though it would block them from pooping, you should clean it. And handling them is a good thing. I thought my baby hated me because she would freak every time I picked her up, but when she got older she loved being held by me, and even saw me as her protector when something scared her.
