Hi :) I'm reasonably new to the chicken world (took care of 1 week old chicks for a friend) and I was wondering if it is best to start out with 1 day old chicks or hatching eggs. Also the eggs would not be shipped just picked up locally. Thanks for helping me out.

I think it would be easiest to start with day old chicks - I think they are less complicated that going thru the throes of hatching

Thanks! I was leaning towards the chick department since I raised 1 week old pullets for a month....

! Great to have you with us! I prefer chicks...but that's just because I'm a novice hatcher. Some on BYC are real pros. The fact that your eggs wouldn't be shipping makes a huge difference in the success rate of the hatch. Good luck whatever you decide.

Glad you joined us! X2 1muttsfan's post. Get a few chicks for now and then when you feel like expanding the flock see about hatching some. Also keep in mind when you buy chicks, you can buy sexed chicks, when you hatch chicks you'll have a few roosters to deal with.

Ok! Plans are in motion! I'm going to buy 1 day old chicks locally

Now If I can just convince some friends to "help" build my coop. In other words build it while I drink coffee!
