I have a broody EE and she has been sitting on 2 eggs for exactly 21 days today. I came home from work and saw that the first egg had hatched, but sadly the chick was dead and alone in the nesting box. The hen had abandoned the chick and the remaining egg for the nesting box next to it to sit on another new egg. The chick looked a little squished so I am assuming that since my EE is an inexperienced mother, that she might have suffocated the chick accidentally. There is still one egg left that is set to hatch on Wednesday, but I am torn on what to do with it. I want to leave the egg with her since she can control the temperature, but at the same time I am afraid that the same thing is going to happen to this chick if it hatches. But then I run into the problem of what to DO with the egg if I take it since I don't have an incubator. I took out one of the nesting box dividers so she has more room just in case. Any advise fellow chicken lovers?
