How can you tell if your older rooster it getting to old. The older roosters legs is really bad looking.

if he is having trouble keeping up and doesn't seem happy or not able to do his job or protect the hens. He is probably pretty old.

You're roosters legs look bad and you're wondering why he's struggling to keep up with your flock?

Ok, that sounds meaner than its intended, but usually if something seems off its because it is. What do his legs look like exactly? Raised scales, icky junk under them? If so, he's got scaly leg mites and they need to be treated. If that's the issue, he'll likely feel much better and act like a much younger bird once they're gone. Assuming that's what's going on with his legs.
You also didn't say how old he actually is? My last rooster was almost 9 years old when he kicked the bucket and he was still doing his roosterly duties up until the day he left for the big coop in the sky.
Figure out what's up with those legs, fix them if you can and then see how he feels. He can't go to work if he doesn't feel good and your rooster relies on those legs of his to get his job done ;)
Good luck.

The age of a chicken doesn't determine how "good" its legs look. It sounds like there is more to this than the potential age of a rooster. Pics?
