Today one of my girls is a woman. She laid her first egg. I was outside and saw her pacing around in the coop, moving stuff around in the nesting box (I knew this was it, I've seen this bizarre behavior in 1 of my other chickens. I have 6 but now only 2 lay). After about 30minutes I hear her making all kinds of racket. Like she just did something amazing. I walk over there and open the lid to the nesting box, I can feel the excitement and anticipation. I've been waiting a while for this moment. What did I find? Nothing. All of that for nothing? Disappointed I go back inside. About an hour later I go outside to leave and sitting on the ground outside the coop is a small brown egg with my girl Daisy standing right by it. What? All of that commotion and moving the bedding around and you lay it outside? I'm assuming she was shook up by not realizing what was going on. Is this something I should worry about or will she be a better planner as time goes on?

Congrats to you and your little lady on her first egg! I can't tell how many times I've stood nearby after hearing them carrying on and after they left the box, ran in to see the little gift they left for me to find a whole bunch of nothing. But every day is like Easter when I go out to the coop and see who laid what. And each time I get 1 more egg it's sooooo exciting! I have 12 girls and I've gotten 7 eggs in one day, but it's usually 4 - 6. I nearly jumped for joy when I heard a little thud one day after my poor little egger was squawking her head off. She had also laid her first egg in the run... like it popped out and caught her by surprise, but she's since been laying in one of the boxes like a normal chicken.
