So my 5 and a half month old Welsummer somehow injured her toenail yesterday. It looks like she somehow cracked the nail causing the quick to bleed. Anyway, I used gauze soaked in ice water as a cold compress then held her toe in cornstarch to stop the bleeding. Once the bleeding was under control, I used Neosporin without pain relief and lightly wrapped her toe to keep infection out.

My question is, how long do I keep it bandaged and how often should I change the bandage?

Thanks in advance! :love

When it has to deal with the legs or feet you should stop the bleeding with cornstarch which you did, and let it air out. I do not use any bandages as it can hold bacteria since she is walking on it. Keep cleaning and use Neosporin for about 2 days then leave it alone to scab. She should heal up nicely after a couple of days. Just keep an eye out for infection. Good luck!!!

Oh I thought the bandage would help prevent bacteria! So I should remove the bandage???
