Tom died rapidly.

Last night when I was taking care of my stock, I noticed one of my breeding toms was laying down, unusual for mating season. I went in his tractor, and he stood up when I touched him. He seemed a tad lethargic, but nothing extreme. He wasn’t strutting at all, which concerned me a bit, and he didn’t gobble when I tried to get him to.

I noticed a single instance of yellow diarrhea on the ground when I moved the tractor. There was no sign of any more. Fearing the dreaded blackhead, I planned to go out this morning to see if I could find any medication. Before I left, though, I went to his tractor and found him lying there dead.

He was a big, beautiful, healthy Narragansett. He would have been two years old in May. Would blackhead have killed him so quickly?

Yes, it can take them quickly. Generally, they will be lethargic but still eating and drinking and the head of the bird will have a yellow cast. If measures aren't taken within the first day or two then it is often too late.

Sorry for your loss,

Bo
