Hi im new to byc and found alot of good information on this site...thanks to everyone posting replys...my question is i have 3 reds bout 5 months old 2 silver phoenix hens 5 months old , and 1 mix unsure breed... also 3 black breasted phoenix roos and 1 barred rock roo...all abot 5 and six months old...they free range on my 1 acre land....no eggs yet and wondering if having too many roos a problem.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! 1 roo can easily handle 10 hens on his own. So I would say yes you have too many boys. Too many boys can also cause over breeding of your girls which can damage them on their backs. They should be coming up to laying age now but each bird is individual as to when they begin laying. Maybe keeping them in a run with your coop could help too, as they are free ranging they could be laying anywhere and you not know about it. Do they have any hiding spots you could check just incase they are hiding eggs from you?

Wishing you the very best of luck in the future.

Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

Hi yorkshire coop ...thanks for replying...i do have a trailer home on my land and they all spent most of the day under there in the cool shade..im gonna look under there to see if the left me any surprises .
also will it help if i just want to breed just the phoenix birds, would u recommend i keep then in a run all by themselves?

They may well have left you some gifts under there!!

If want your Phoenix birds to breed and any eggs from them to be pure Phoenix I would certainly keep them seperate so no other breed of roo barring the Phoenix roo can breed the Phoenix girls. This way you will not be getting mixed breed chicks.

Welcome to the BYC flock! We are glad you joined us!

You may need to cover the run to prevent some other breed rooster from sneaking in and ruining your plans. Having too many roosters usually leads to fighting each other.
