Hello all,
My friend has what has turned out to be 4 roosters out of her 10 total chickens. She loves all her birds, but we are in a residential area not zoned for roosters, and it's too many roosters per hen. It's becoming problematic. She is hoping to be able to give them to a home that won't eat them. Does anyone know of a good way to find new homes for roosters that will keep them out of the pot?

We are in wallingford CT if that helps. Any advice is appreciated.
Thank you!

I've rehomed all my extra cockerels/roosters through local CL and FB Poultry groups. On CL, I ask $5 for the bird. When I find a home that I know wants him for a flock leader, I decline the money.
It also helps to take really good pictures of the bird down at their level. Try to use a nice back drop.

Thank you for your response! I'll let her know.
Have a great day

While it is nice to get roosters flocks for them to live in, it is not always practical. Keeping that many roosters in that small of flock will be a very poor life for all of them, with tension, squabbling and hormones.

It is better IMO to have a good life and a quick end. Her set up will not be a good life for any of them, pullets or cockerels... unless the roosters go. My advice, is once they are not your birds, you have no say in them. Don't ask questions... it is more important for the roosters to be gone.

I think that is the right decision.

There are no guarantees. Once you give up ownership you lose control of what happens to them. That doesn't mean you don't try but it doesn't always work out. The more conditions you put on it the harder it is.

Find the Connecticut thread in the "Where am I? Where are you!" section on this forum and chat with your neighbors. Hopefully it is active. Maybe look for the Rhode Island thread too.

Place an ad in the "Buy, Sell, Trade" section of this forum.

Chat with your county extension office. They may know someone.

Chat with the people at the feed store. They may know someone.

Or run an ad on Craigslist. You'll have to be a good interviewer to eliminate the ones looking for a meal. This one can be really frustrating.
