But when you do want chicks, broody hens are awesome! I love letting the hens hatch and raise babies. Not only is it easy for me, it's the cutest thing ever. I have 3 hens with babies right now. Big, oversized babies. Twelve weeks and almost 9 weeks old. Their mommas are still with them. It's great, what with the unseasonably wretched weather we've been having.
And here's a picture of one of my broody jails. It's an old rabbit hutch that was being thrown away. I completely reconfigured it for my own purposes.
