Took 14 Cornish Xs to the processor today

Laura-
I am certainly no expert in Halal, but I believe the Koran is very explicit in that the animal is to be handled with respect during it's death. I believe cutting meat or limbs off a live animal is considered Haram (unlawful) according to the laws of the Koran.

As with many of the Jewish Kosher laws, from what I understand, Halal laws were helpful sanitary laws. The idea of Kosher and Halal slaughter (again, this is my underdstanding of it, anyway) is that (as a previous poster mentioned to me) it is CRITICAL that the blood be fully drained from the animal. I think both Kosher and Halal laws say that the blood in a dead animal is poisonous.

To counteract the bad press, there is a great push amongst Kosher and Halal processors to make sure the animal is treated humanely. The processor I was at didn't have any hold-down equipment, and the animals were able to see other animals being slaughtered, but none of the animals seem panicked or particularly stressed. For me, it was just hard to see the throat slit and so much blood; I will admit that the animals went down fast; probably within 20-30 seconds, mostly without a struggle.

I apologize in advance if any of those details are incorrect, but I think I have the gist of it right.

Halal Slaughter? Correct me if I'm wrong, but neither muslims, jews, or even hindus eat pork, so your neighbors cutting the feet off of the pigs sends up red flags as far as 'ritual' slaughter goes. That just sounds like outright cruelty.

This may sound wierd, but it makes me feel so much better to hear all ya'lls stories about how you respect that your chickens gave their lives for your eating. Conscious appreciation is really important. Through out the entire raising, killing, processing and eating.

Hey all, I don't know that My MIL's neighbors were Islamic, as I know nothing about Islamic ways, I thought that it MIGHT be why they were torturing the animals like that. Yes I agree that it was cruel and so did animal control.

Iceblink, good catch! I only read "goats", I didn't read "pigs".

I'm glad that knowing we respect and appreciate our animals for what they are giving us makes you feel better. Many people think I am a ghoul for raising my own food; they completely do not understand the care I have for the creatures who help keep me alive.

I think most people don't understand and/or are so disconnected from their food sources. They buy it in the store wrapped in cellophane and don't take even a moment to think about what it really was, where it was raised and how it was treated throughout it's life and at it's slaughter.

Gees and then they think it is so distasteful to raise your own! That's really not thinking.

What you're doing is to be commended.
