I have had three hens for about three and a half years now and they have been together since day one. My beautiful Buff Orpington Geraldine had to be put to sleep. My other two hens seem scared and are not eating much. I was wondering if anyone else has noticed this in their chickens. She was very gentle and sweet but she was the top hen. Do you think they will get back to normal?

Each time there has been a change in flock membership, my chicks take some time to readjust.

Give them time. Love them. Talk to them. They will figure out who's the top hen next.

Edited - I forgot to give you your hug. *hug* I am sorry for your loss.

Your hens will figure out who's in charge. I lost my top hen 2 weeks ago. The other girls miss her, especially the one she used to snuggle with at night in the coop. Slowly but surely, one of the other girls is emerging as the next leader and we're all adjusting to life without her.
