If i have one rooster and three hens will the rooster show that he is dominant rooster to the hens............like pick at them. Or is he just being mean.........
and the rooster is a road island red rooster and three road island red hens........

Is he the only roo? If not, then he's demonstrating his position.
I have RIR's also and had to get rid of all the Roo's. They were mean to each other as well as the girls. Mean as in jump on top and pull feathers out of their necks, then chase them around until their screaming! I tried getting rid of just 1, then 2 then I finally just got rid of all the roo's even the Bantams, except for 1.

I then read that RIR's can be mean, despite being advertised as social.

He might pick at them, and he might also over breed them... be careful. You've got some low hen to rooster numbers going on there! Good luck!

Best ratio for rooster to hens is 1 rooster to each 10 hens. You could easily have another 7-9 hens. Your existing hens would be better off also with more hens because the rooster won't pick on the 3 so much... everybody would be happier.
