Hello, as the title says, I'm a total newbie to raising chickens. My wife and I have discussed raising chickens for a long time and have now decided we want to try our hand at it. The first main thing I'm looking for is plans to build a nice and affordable coop. We will be mainly raising the chickens for eggs and figure we will need to have around 6 to 8 chickens. It's only my wife and myself at home now but, we figure if we have enough eggs to share with our neighbor we might be able to get them to take care of the chickens for us when we travel, that is if we ever get to travel again. Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself, by the way my name is Jay. I figure my wife will be joining also but, if not she may just get on here with me and check things out. So if anyone has words of wisdom, coop plans or information concerning the best chickens for laying it would all be appreciated.

Welcome to BYC! This is a great place to learn and share your chicken 🐓 adventures. What part of the country are you in? Climate can factor in to what type of coop you need for your flock.
Hello Sarah,
We live in Northeast Louisiana so cold weather won't be that big of a problem. Wind and thunderstorms with possible tornado's could be another thing though.

You definitely want an open, airy coop with plenty of ventilation. Chickens are able to handle cold more easily than hot weather. I'm sure you have plenty of predators that would enjoy a free chicken dinner so a sturdy coop and run covered with hardware cloth should keep out most of the annoying wild critters. Also, lots of shade and protection to keep their coop and run dry. Chicken poo and mud not a great combination.
