First of all, I wish to give all the regular posters a big thank you for the huge wealth of information you have provided. For a few weeks now this site has been extremely helpful, consistently ranking on top of all my Google searches. Today I am pleased to have joined, and this is my first post. It is my hopes I don't seem like too much of a fool. I really plan on utilizing all the help of some seasoned veteran chicken owners. Without this site, I'd probably be completely lost--so again, thanks for all the help!!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

Yes, I am very new. I grew up with them as a kid, but was completely oblivious. Obviously I'm not a whole lot more educated now, either... :( I first got the chicks on Saturday ( 04 - 06 - 2013 )

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

6 Chicks. Born 04-02-2013. Tomorrow is their 1 week birthday, and I think they are so precious.

(3) What breeds do you have?

We have 3 Crested (Polish?), 1 New Hampshire Red, 1 Brown Leghorn, and 1 Gold Sex Link. All should be females.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

Google - the gift from God. I was Googling about raising chickens with dogs and found this site. Other chicken related questions brought this site to the top of the list consistently. However, IDK how to post on my tablet..Having to use laptop now.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I am a 5 year vegetarian, passionate about politics, I love gardening, and repurposing. My current project is a repurposed chicken coop made from an old dresser. It should be completed tomorrow for their 1 week birthday.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I am nearly 23 years old, I have a spouse for 6 years now, an older brother, my dad is my best friend, and 3 dogs who I love very, very much. One is a 9 year old Catahoula Leopard Hound who is moderately interested in the chicks, a 5 year old Labrador / Shar Pei mix who is completely uninterested in the chicks, and a 3 year old Pit Bull who is a little too curious about the chicks. I work in security currently at an upscale gated community. Past work experience is for The Port Of Tampa, Department Of Homeland Security - FEMA, and worked the Republican National Convention when that came through town ( despite my better judgement :-P ).

Any tips to a newbie chicken owner would be really, really appreciated! Also, how do I post pictures?

THANK YOU!!! :DDD

Hey thanks everybody!! Very warm bunch of folks on this site!! I would've posted the pictures on my tablet, but for whatever reason BYC chose not to work on it...? I hope I'm not the only person with this problem.

Okay but I do have some pictures and questions I'd like to share with you all...

Okay, this is the completed repurposed chicken coop..They won't be using this for a while now, today is their one week birthday.

Side view. Drawer is able to pull out for easy cleaning, side cut out. Added beams for easier access to the ramp.

The coop is entirely screened in with porch screen, and chicken wire...Should be 100% predator proof...

Overnight they can be locked in. The loose boards in front is a little walkway to help them up, as the side ramp is a little steep without it.

Just another beautiful view. Projected total was approximately $20.

4/6 chicks. Top left is Gremlin, below that is Percy, to the right of that is Isaiah, and on the bottom is Gallea. Not pictured is Leticia, and Narcessa.

Left again is Gremlin, below is Gallea, above that is Percy, and on top right is Isaiah. Again, not pictured is Leticia and Narcessa.

Percy.

Temporary coop set up in bathtub. Another drawer used as a nesting area. 250 watt red heat lamp adjusted to about 90 degrees (thermometer in front of drawer in tub) Waterer on the left, lifted slightly and feeder on top. Had a tree fall in the yard last weekend in a storm, so I used the scraps and made "chicken art" for them to play on.

Another view.

Will this suffice?

Thanks again! Oh and Gallea appears to either have A) crap right outside her butt (hard) or B) a tail bone. How do I know which it is? It looks like poop, but it is hard. She is still defecating although it will dingleberry for a little while before it drops. If I stick chicky's butt in warm water will that harm her? How warm? How long? And how do I decifer which it is?

Thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks, thanks...I'm a moron!
