So, I usually plant totally chicken friendly plants outside the front of their run to give them a treat & brighten up the yard...plus, I totally benefit from the herb garden too! BUT...there’s this one shady, pretty wet corner where the run fence and the chainlink yard fence meet at a tree. There’s a small nursery owner who comes and cleans my chicken run in exchange for all the poop...incredible deal, I know!! Anyways, he brought some plants for my herb garden, my pollinator garden & my yard. 2 candidates for my dark corner are spreading type plants who would thrive in that area, but the chickens would be able to reach. They are loved by hummingbirds, but I have a sneaking feeling they would be chicken toxic:
•Giant Periwinkle
•Turk’s Cap

Anybody know about either one???

Just off the top of my head I know periwinkle is a mildly toxic plant to humans and dogs, but not sure with chickens. My birds don't seem to be interested in eating the plants in the toxic category out of their own preferences but I wouldn't plant one up against the run if the choices of what they can reach are limited. I've never heard of Turks Cap though.

Update, I planted the (butterfly, bird, bee) “Pollinator Garden” on my back porch. And planted the herb & “others” garden out by the chickens, as per usual. Anything I was unsure of, chicken wise, was a flowering plant that was already known as beneficial for pollinators, so it got a space on my porch! Problem Solved!
Here’s the pollinator garden on my porch; numbered & named from left to right:

1. Echinacea (Cone Flower)
2. Shrimp plant
3. Giant Periwinkle Vine
4. Turk’s Cap with Creeping Jenny on each side
5. Bee Balm x 2
6. Tropical Milkweed
7. Salvia-Black & Blue
8. Tropical Milkweed

Here’s my Herb & Chicken Garden:

**These are all 2-Hole cinderblocks, so it’s kinda hard to see the ones located in the side/back holes**
1. Teeny-tiny Lemon Basil seedling sprouts (protected on the back & side by hardware mesh until they get bigger & won’t be devastated by one peck of a chicken!)
2. Rosemary
3. Lavender (one in each hole)
4. Giant Parsley (all four front holes)
5. Oregano

Both, to the left and the right of the herb garden, I planted the rows of sunflowers. The sunflowers close enough for the chickens to reach, are protected by pieces of PVC left over from DIY projects.
