I did some searching and haven't seen anyone talking about this, so I suspect it's a rather unusual thing to try...
A little background: All our hens are free-range in our large, fenced yard. I have a single Modern Game hen, a rescue I added to my flock of mostly larger hens. Despite all of my efforts at integration, she is still bullied by them. It's upsetting because she has quickly become my favorite chicken, due to her very gregarious nature (she usually greets me by flying onto my lap or shoulders) and how she follows me around everywhere.
She is avoidant of the other chickens to the point of refusing to go to sleep in the coop and preferring to roost elsewhere in the yard. She used to roost near our back door and so I would find her at dusk and manually put her in the predator-proof coop for the night, but now she's started to vanish for large parts of the day/all night and I can't find her until the next morning, when she cheerfully comes up for food.
I suspect she has been roaming outside the fenced yard (she is a better flyer than the rest and also very small- she may have found a way to squeeze through the fence gaps) and although she seems quite adept at avoiding predators, I'm still worried every time I can't find her and scared I won't see her again in the morning. Apparently Modern Game hens can be very broody so she may have also made a nest out there.
So, I had a thought- I've seen a lot of people using chicken aprons, and if I could get one small enough for her (or sew it myself) I could attach a pocket for a small GPS tracker, such as a these. It would give me a lot of peace of mind to be able to find her hiding places! Does anyone have any thoughts/experience with something like this?
