Trade raising meat birds for processing?

Hi everyone!

Has anyone ever made an arrangement where you raise meat birds and then someone else processes them? I was thinking of trading some of the finished birds for the processing, but I'm not sure what a fair honest trade would be.

Be generous, processing is a lot of hard, messy work!

Processing is easily more than 10% of my cost in a broiler. So that's what I would probably offer. I dont do that particular arrangement, but I do trade 10% of my birds to two friends to come help me process. And that's with my own personal equipment and space. I honestly still feel it's not quite enough and, in some regions and situations 10% might not be enough to really cover the job of burchering if they arent getting your assistance through the process. With a breakdown of how much each bird costs you to grow and a comparison of how much it would cost to go through a professional butcher, I think you could land on a decent hourly rate to translate into pounds of meat - if that makes sense..
