After a lot of research, contemplation procrastination, and over thinking, I finally decided to plunge in and get a flock of six chicks (the max allowed in my city). Because I am novice to construction and woodwork in general, I first looked at preconstructed coops and runs. However, I just couldn't find one that I liked. After looking at examples of DIY coops on this site and others, I decided to just go ahead and make my own. My parents agreed to let me use their circa 1940 Bantam trailer (that was my granparents) as the base of my coop and then I just sort of made it up from there. I enlisted the help of my nephew and one of my friends for some of the heavy lifting(nephew) as well as the more difficult wood cuts (friend), but I am proud to say I did most of the construction (and plenty of trouble shooting) myself! I used an old window we had laying around (minus a few panes of glass, but I'll throw some plastic in there, and winterize in general, in the fall). The girls seems to like it. Now I have to construct an attached run. I welcome ideas from the community on the best and cheapest way to construct a run.

A relatively low cost starting point would be welded wire roll fencing and t-posts. Most home improvement stores have it in stock year round. Over time you will probably want to make improvements for predator proofing, but it will give your flock a starting space

Great idea. Thanks!
