Training chicks

I have just transitioned our chicks to their coop. They have figured out how to get inside the enclosed portion however not sure they will put themselves to bed yet. Should I let them figure it out or do they need guidance for the next few days. Worried because it gets cold at night

If they don't go inside on their own in the evening, it will be necessary to put them in the coop so that it can be secured from predators.

Give them time to go in on their own but if it gets dark or looks like they are roosting where they are at, stick them in the coop. They will get it eventually.

I've found using a battery operated puck light in the coop helps show them the way.
Turn it on just before dusk, the shut it off when you lock up at dark.

I agree with putting them in at night after dark if they don't go in on their own. I've done that many times. I had one group that caught on after one time, I've had a couple of groups where it took three weeks. Most catch on in about a week.

I don't know how old your chicks are or what the nighttime temperatures are wherever you are, but there is a real good chance cold is not an issue. If you consider your run truly predator proof you may not need to lock them up at night but most of us consider out coop safer than the run.
