Transforming a home into an energy efficient home... suggestions?

Currently, our only source of heat for our home is propane. Gas is not available. We have been considering radiant floor heat. Have any of you installed this into your home? Bar the initial (and expensive) cost to install, has it saved you any money in the long run?

We also are thinking about installing solar panels to offset the cost of our electric. Have any of you done this?

What tips can you provide?
