thats it. i woke up in an anxiety sweat cause the first thing i heard this a/m/ was the cuckaricoooooo of my red hen (yes, she is a hen, lays eggs, and can even be broody, but she is a few years old, her brown eggs are fairly pale, and now she is crowing).then the horrible screeching for two hours of miss screech. so they must go. i like them but they will have a new home at my car's garage guy who has been bugging me for two layers and he can have two or three hens in his backyard, as long as not roosters, and i think the change in scenery and area (they have a larger fenced yard there) will stop the crowing.
so i will only have the four whtie leghorn layers ... so i will be back down to four boring hens...
if i get two pekin hens that are supposedly laying already, will they have a problem w/ leghorns?
are they 'quieter' then my red sex link/rir two hens?
will they manage to go up and down the rock i have stuck in the coop yard to get in the coop, and tehn will they be able to get up to the roost? the rock is a permament fixture. the shnitzels, also heavy meat birds, manage to go up and down the rock but they dont roost, rather sit on the laying box, as they seem absolutely incapbable of flight. i can make a ladder if need to get to the roost (not very high up for a chicken but if the chicken is heavy...
they just seem really big fluffy and heavy... also, do their feet get gross in the winter with mud on their feathers? do they need special treatment then? (washing off the feet, etc.) we dont really get below freezing weather here, but thier yard is all dirt and their coop is polycarbonate flooring with sawdust/chips in winter. will that be a problem?
ive heard that they go broody. can they be broken of it fast? i dont mind if they dont lay every day, i like having a few hens that are more 'pettable' then the leghorns, and prettier too...
i have til wednesday to decide as then i can go and buy the two pekins if they are still available...
