Hi all...new here and will post a proper intro soon. But in the meantime, I'm picking up our first chicken tonight. She's 6 months old and I'm just wondering what's the best way to transport her that will cause the least amount of stress. It'll be about an hour drive home. Thx much!

A cardboard box, not too awful much bigger than the chicken (you don't want her sliding around in there), with a bunch of 1" holes poked in it for air and the top securely closed so the chicken can't escape, works well.

Be careful, though, with trying to get one chicken here and one chicken there and another another place... that tends to be a recipe for social friction (pecking, cannibalism) and diseases. Not saying it can't be done, but it would be better to get all your chickens together from one place, if at all possible...

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

A small pet carrier works really great but a small cardboard box with ventilation holes works fine too. Chickens are calmer if it is dark so throw a towel over it and put an old towel on the floor of it so the chicken won't slide around. A small container is best so the the hen will feel more secure. Have fun with your new project!
