Yesterday evening was one of the scariest moments I lived through.
It took me hours to fall asleep after this, even then I still had a nightmare that my babies were hurt.

Traumatizing moment:

I love my chickens, so so so much. I litterly even begged my mom for 6 orpingtons for my birthday. And she finally caved and gave me 6 lavender o rpingtons and 5 barred rocks (with bad barring).
So today was the kinda day where I spent it with the chickens. My wonderful babies. All 11 of mine and all of my moms. (We share a flock) I was holding them, just plain loving them.
After dinner I even took one of my little brothers to go hold my younger ones from my birthday because they adore him and love to cuddle. So it's about time to start herding the chickens in for their bed time, I take my little brother down the house and walk back in through the gate.
Thats when all heck broke loose.
It was like somebody dropped a bomb in the middle of my chickens. It was like the ripple affect of stones skipping on the water. So many had ran towards me and I think oh god. I look up and passing the day coop is a hawk.
I scream hawk, hawk. It's has a chicken. This hawk is holding a gray chicken. My mother freaking baby.
My family assembles our selves the best we can yelling and screaming and chasing. The chicken it has is obviously alive. We pray and hope that it drops the chicken. My baby my baby my baby.
We've had hawks before, even grab chickens before, but this hawk didn't stop for a second. He passes over the corn field. Gone.
I collapse to the ground, I haven't been able to stop screaming. My mom tries to hug my but I feel like I'm dying. I'll never stand again, but I have to find out who he took. I mean I was right there. I had just held them all.
My vision is blacking in the sides. I start spitting I don't even know what out my mouth. I make it back in the chicken yard and they're hiding in the coop and barn.
I start counting at the coop. Lavender first. 1 2 3 4 5... freak. 1 2 3 4 5. Where's hazel? My babies gone. Oh wait 1 2 3 4 5 6 she's in the barn. Wait the baby bareds 1 2 3 4 5. Good. Combs? connie? My ten year olds are there. I cry and throw up and feel like I'm dying but I count every single chicken multiple times. They're all there.
My granny herds them all into the night coop with me. I'm still shaking but I have all of my babies.
Meanwhile to my unknown knowledge my mother, oldest little brother, and my sister (who didnlt even stop to get shoes) who helped raise my chickens saw a big bird near the neighbors shed....on the other side of the large corn field. They ran there and proceeded along the field and up into the woods past our lands garbage sight from the 1800's. They kept looking and calling out for what they thought was one of my babies.
I didn't know where they were (almost a miles worth of walking away) but knew I had to tell them we had all of our babies. I went into the cornfield searching where another one of my sisters and another brothers was searching, hoping that the hawk had dropped her and they could save her. I was calling out for my mother and telling everyone we have them all.
At the same time my mom as ahead of my brother and sister and stopped for half a second at two huge trees. In front of her was the creek and a large dead tree. just then through the trees the bird paces over her and slowly through the dead tree. The chicken is limp and white. Not my baby.
She tells this to my sister who is relieved for a second but then panics because hazel (a orpington) looks white, and Cloudy (a barred rock with bad barring) looks white from a certain view, and her favorite chicken of all is a bright white colored barred rock). You can imagine her true relief when the got the call from my dad that everyone was safe.
But this isn't the craziest part. Not only was y mom just surprised she found the horrible bird but she was surprised that it wasn't even a hawk. We were all so shocked to see a bird holding what we thought was our chicken that we hardly looked at what really had it. It had the largest wingspan we'd ever seen. Nearly four times as big as our adult rooster. Something i'd never guess in 1000 years. A freaking bald eagle.
After running and walking well over a mile they returned and we all cried and picked so many big thistle things off of us. Long story short we love our babies and I'm grateful.

Wow, what a terrifying story! :hugs Seeing predators doing their thing is quite scary and stressful. I am glad all your babies are ok though. Thanks for sharing!
