Treating for mites on a hot 🔥 day...

We have discovered a fairly big mite infestation in our coop (and on flock). We live in the Pacific NW. Today will be unusually not (over 100 degrees!) I have to work the rest of the week and really need to treat the coop and hens/roos but am worried about over stressing them. Is it a bad idea to treat them today? I'll be using Elector PSP...not cheap but supposed to be effective!

How wild are they? If they dont mind being handled then I think you should treat them because 1 minute of being held is better then a week of itchyness. I haven't heard of that product, my chickies have mites too so could you let me know if it works? How many chickens do you have?

I have 25 birds. This stuff was spendy (around $135.00) but should last me numerous treatments. Its the same ingredient that is in Trifexis (Elanco product). My birds are handle-able. Its just so darn hot today! I'm providing lots of water for them. My coop is primarily wood so I thought I'd keep them outside and treat it first...its big! (4 rooms) with cement floor. Last night I removed all of the pine shavings. I heard I should also spray around their necks(behind combs)

Some other good places to spray are under the chin, by the ears, comb and possibly near the eyes if it's safe enough, thats where I see the most bugs on my chickens. I'd lock them out for the day, they'll probably find somewhere shady to stay while the coop is being treated. I heard somewhere that pine shavings can attract bugs, if you're willing to spend extra I use this great stuff for my coop. If not, you can sprinkle diatomaceous earth on the bedding. Good luck! I know this can be such a frustrating process.

I buy it at my local feed store, i'd ask around for it in yours but it is available online if you can't find it.

Permethrin works as well as Elector PSP but way less expensive. Remember one thing if you have read their fact sheet it states for mites repeated applications may be needed. I spray once a week for 3/4 weeks. Neither product will kill the mite eggs so repeat treatments is a must. Good luck...

You can also put poultry dust in the nest boxes.

Treat them at night while they are roosting. Use a small flashlight or head lamp, and it's best to also spray the entire coop, top to bottom, and replace bedding if possible. Night time temps will be less awful too.

I use pine shaving in my coops. I spray everything, every crack and crevice roosts, everywhere. I give the birds treats to get them outside to give the coops time to dry.
