Hello, I need help. I had been noticing over the winter but really this spring that my rooster was losing feathers. First on his butt then on his neck and the other day it appeared he had been plucking his leg feathers. I investigated last night and was horrified to find red tan little sesame seed like bugs which I assume are mites crawling on him and at the base of his feathers there are white scale-like material (lice?). From reading various posts it points to a bad mite and lice investation! My poor guy has been suffering. My hens do not have the same feather loss and I did not find white scale (eggs?) on thier feathers or obvious bugs crawling but it was only a quick check. I am now wondering what types of treatment are out there for this? And is there a non-toxic, organic way to kill and deter these pests? After finding all this on my rooster last night, I ran and got the only thing I had- poultry approved diatanaceous earth and dusted him with it. I had been dusting my coop with this all winter but apparently this did not help
