Treats for my baby chicks

Take some of their chick starter and get it wet with water, so it's mushy. For some reason, this makes it much more exciting than normal feed!

Don't do too much--just a little spoonful at first, then decide on amounts based on how much they eat. You don't want it to sit around and spoil.

Also, little bits of just about anything an adult chicken would eat--but while they are so little, it really is best if they mostly each chick feed (dry or wet, doesn't matter nutritionally.)

Hi there! Mine are two weeks old tomorrow and I waited a week before introducing any sort of treat. They didn’t much like plain Greek yogurt or cottage cheese, but yesterday I did a mashed hard boiled egg and it was pandemonium ! They loved it! Today I grated some apple and the response was also very enthusiastic! I put some in my hand at first , as I have been doing with feed each day, and then give the rest on a little plate. It’s so adorable hearing their excited peeps!

I'm so happy I found this post. It's been awhile since I've had chicks but I'm back in it and they are almost 4wks old. How do I go about incorporating a treat every now and then? Do I just leave it in my hand? Leave it in their shavings? I'm sorry if i sound ignorant🤦‍♀️ I'm trying to make them as friendly as possible since I have 4 boys that want to start in 4-H

Before you start feeding anything other than chick starter, you need to have a spill proof container of chick grit in with them.
You also need to keep all treats to a very low roar as they need a proper complete feed so they can develop correctly. Every time you give them a treat, it throws them off a little. It can get out of hand very quickly.
A little hard boiled or scrambled egg is good.
Making a mash out of their starter is great.
Offer them a plug of sod from the ground where they will ultimately live. It will teach them about scratching and will help them build their immune systems as the sod will expose them to the microbes they will be coming into contact with when they are moved to their coop/run.
