Treats

I am sure glad to hear of someone else taking the time with the outside family. We give are girls treats every day. We let them out to play for a couple of hours this way we can make sure everyone is safe. When they see the red bowls everyone comes running. It’s fun to watch them run.

BOSS = Black Oil Sunflower Seeds.....mine LOVE it. I keep some in a glass mason jar. If I need them to come in the coop or any place in particular I just shake the jar and they all come running. I keep layer mash out as well as free choice grit and oyster shell. They get a lttle bit of BOSS every day. They have the run of the yard at least for a while every day so they can eat bugs, weeds, grass, etc. As long as there is snow on the ground they don't want to go in the yard, just the covered run. They do get some fruit or veggie or cabbage, lettuce, kale etc every day when they can not forage. During the worst cold here they would get some warm oatmeal with some chopped up leftovers or fruit or veggies in the morning. They are healthy and are laying. They also seem very happy when they can scratch in the dirt/sand/leaf mulch that is in the run. And they love to attack and demolish the cabbage/lettuce/green stuff that I hang. Keeps them entertained....So the majority of their food is layer mash but I supplement. They also get yogurt or cottage cheese once a week and during winter I sometimes feed them mealworms as a treat - scatter some in the run, they go crazy. I also keep a flock block in the coop, they work on that when we have storms they get 'locked up' for...
