Trimming Parrots Nails! I know i'm in the chick zone... :D

I've had an adult orange winged amazon since 10 years and I've seen that when he 's got long nails and he cant walk on the bars he just trims them on his own with his beak.I once tried to do it myself and even though i trimmed a small end off blood started coming out and that freaked me and the parrot out.

Ahhhh Thanks! He is my baby for life~ ever since I was a kid I swore one day I would have one... finally last year I saved up enough money to buy him. And he is the biggest sweetie pie!! When I walk past him he *coo's* at me until I pet him. He love to come out and play but right now he thinks he's a chicken??!!!

LOL He likes to get down on the ground where they are and I have to go and snatch him up! Silly Bird~ I don't want him getting pecked! I'm not sure if they would but I don't see why not they peck everything out of curiousity. Yea Gabriel would let me cut his wings without a problem he had a few feathers that needed to be trimmed because they were worn down and I stretched out his wings and told him pretty wings~ pretty wings and pet him and he was totally fine with that. I think the nails are just completely different. I could give him a special blankie

As far as a local competent vet

I don't trust them~ I would rather do it myself, I wont take any more chances with them. If I met somebody that has birds and I knew they had enough knowledge and expertise to trim nails or wings I might consider it. But I will never walk into a vets office with him unless it's absolutely necessary. It's a shame really but I almost lost him and I won't make that mistake again. You migt consider yourself lucky not having them around!! You know my next project~ I would love to build a Aviary out back for him!! How cool would that be~ just for play time! I have an old bird cage outside so I'll bring him out in the cage in the mornings, let the chickens outside, let the dogs out, he can hear the wild birds out singing to! I know he likes be able to change locations so it's kinda fun for him. I think I will be trying that towel, blankie method though! Thanks for your response
