My 1 day old Ameraucana chick is having trouble standing on legs. He had quite a traumatic experience hatching out of egg (shrink wrapped) and I had to assist. Once out, he looked like he was doing fine walking, eating, and drinking.'

This morning I woke up to find him struggling to walk or stand. Legs don't look strong enough.

I placed some kitchen cabinet liner down in aquarium and it gives him better grip and is doing better but not totally.

What's going on? Anything I can do?

Here are some pictures of my little guy... IMG_7806.JPG IMG_7808.JPG IMG_7809.JPG IMG_7810.JPG IMG_7812.JPG IMG_7813.JPG

Sorry, so that looks like splay leg to me. Vitamins will help as both a cuased by a combination of bad luck and often times nutrition issues. I'm sorry you will need to reseach splayed leg in chicks. I haven't had that myself but the best I have seen is a taping a dual leg brace to help keep both legs in the right position while the muscles and tendons form and heal. I'll see if i can find you some info to help

You can try this:put a small cup with a piece of paper towel in it in the incubator with the chick in it. The sides of the cup will support him and force his legs under him until he can stand on his own. It needs to be a small narrow cup if possible, hopefully he will gain enough strength to stand up. Nutri drench vitamins full strength will help. Give him a drop or two from a syringe in the side of his beak. Keep Posting please.

Update: I gave the little guy/gal some vitamin water with electrolytes and put a shelving liner for better traction and its doing so much better. Still wobbly on its feet with the "drunken sailor" walk, but its able to stand upright and walk around. I hope he doesn't relapse when we go to bed at night. I didn't like to find him flailing around on his behind.
